Let's face it -- family life has ranked among the most popular TV show subjects since the very first black-and-white sets came out in the 1940s. Back then, people tuned in to keep up with the Ricardos on "I Love Lucy" or the Cleavers on "Leave it to Beaver." While family-themed shows remained popular over the next few decades as TV spread its wings, the family sitcom really hit its stride in the '80s.
Early TV families had a certain reputation to uphold -- think June Cleaver cleaning the house in heels and pearls, or TV moms and dads sleeping in separate beds -- but by the '80s and '90s, the TV family was finally allowed to get real. "The Cosby Show" was one of the most popular shows ever to feature a successful and intact African-American family. "Roseanne," "Married...with Children," and "The Simpsons" showed the dysfunctional side of things, and producers were no longer afraid to deal with "very special issues," including rape, drugs, and abuse.
