Whether you believe in all of the messages and stories contained within it or, and whether or not you've read it cover to cover, you know the Bible's stories at least a little. You can't live in this culture and not know them, after all. Everyone knows the story of the Fall from Eden, the Exodus from Egypt, the battles for Biblical Israel's survival. Everyone has a pretty good idea that there were ten plagues, lots of kings, some priests, a whole lot of prophets, and a wrathful but ultimately loving God who oversaw all of it.

All of these stories remain so memorable precisely because they are populated by characters who, despite their lives being very different to ours, are incredibly relatable. They have family problems, marital issues, and sometimes they find true love. They have ambitions, successes, and failures. They dream of better lives but they don't always achieve them, or perhaps they help someone else cross that literal (or proverbial) river Jordan but never get to do so themselves.
