Back in the 8th Century B.C., Ancient Rome was nothing but a small town on a river in Italy. Over time it ended being an incredible empire that at one point consisted of continental Europe, Britain,  northern Africa, the Mediterranean islands and a good part of western Asia. All of the powerful empires throughout history were vastly different, but they all had one thing in common: an incredible army, and Rome was no exception. The Roman army was famous throughout its time as well as in history as being one of the most organized and disciplined fighting forces ever. It also was known for being innovative, not only in fighting strategies but in the development and use of weapons. It was one of the first truly professional armies to exist and was the inspiration for many armies to follow.

While the ranks in the Roman army were different than in modern-day armies, many of the roles, duties and responsibilities were very similar to armies today.
