In the '90s, viewers went wild for a series about four single women living it up in New York City. But sorry Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda fans -- long before "Sex and the City," "Living Single" had nailed the four single girls in the city thing. In fact, "Living Single" premiered way back in 1993 -- four years before SATC ever hit the air, and while Khadijah, Maxine, Synclaire, and Regine weren't living it up in Manhattan lofts, they were sharing a Brooklyn brownstone just across the river.
For five seasons, viewers tuned in to watch the predominantly African-American cast deal with situations involving work, love, and family. Originally designed as a vehicle for comedian Queen Latifah, the show truly benefited from a diverse ensemble cast and was the first prime-time network series with four African-American female co-stars.
The series was also important because of its creator, Yvette Lee Bowser. After working on "A Different World," Bowser launched Sister Lee Productions and created "Living Single," making her the first African-American female to develop, write and produce a network TV show.ÂÂ
