About This Quiz

Every year when Halloween approaches, movie lovers pull out all their favorite scary movies to get them into the spooky spirit. Test your knowledge of these movies, but make sure you finish before the witching hour begins! (SPOILER ALERT: the plots of all of these movies WILL be discussed. You have been warned.)
What movie does this sentence describe? Jack the Pumpkin King discovers Christmas and decides to steal it for himself.
It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Because Tim Burton wrote the original poem and the majority of the movie's script, he ardently defends the movie's full title, "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas," even though it was directed by Henry Selick (to whom Burton readily gives credit). There are several small nods to Burton's other movies throughout Nightmare, namely, in the gifts Santa Jack gives to children. The severed head and Sandwormesque snake are in reference to "Beetlejuice," while the Cat and Duck are a callback to "Batman Returns."
Jack O'Lantern
Return to Oz
What movie does this sentence describe? Four senior citizens experience spooky happenings on Halloween while trying to stop a bratty teen from sneaking out to go to a frat party.
Gremlins
House Party 2
Let the Right One In
Boo! A Madea Halloween
Tyler Perry and his friends return when Madea agrees to babysit the bratty and disrespectful Tiffany. In addition to the more experienced actors, the film's cast featured a number of YouTube stars, such as Mike Tornabene, a.k.a. "Dom Mazzeti," Yousef Erakat, a.k.a. "FouseyTUBE," Kian Lawley and Jc Caylen from Our2ndLife, and Liza Koshy, a.k.a. "little brown girl."
What movie does this sentence describe? A young girl and her ghost-hunter father move into a mansion where she meets a friendly ghost and his three comedic relief ghost uncles.
Ghost
The Haunting of Hill House
My Dad Hunts Ghosts
Casper
Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman starred in the 1995 movie adaptation of the classic comic book, "Casper the Friendly Ghost," in which they try to cleanse a house of the spirits living inside. Those ghosts turn out to be Casper (Malachi Pearson as the voice and Devon Sawa in the flesh) and his crass uncles Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso. This facet of the Casper canon finally addresses how the friendly ghost became what he is; the human Casper died of pneumonia at age 12 and chose not to move on because he wanted to keep his dad company.

What movie does this sentence describe? An alien crash lands on Earth and enlists the help of lovable children to help it get home before any adults notice.
Alien
It
Stranger Things
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Steven Spielberg loves to reference his own movies when making a film. As many have noted, during the trick-or-treating scene, E.T. sees a child in a Yoda costume and reacts in a way that leads the viewer to believe he recognizes Yoda. This led to the unofficial fan belief that Yoda and E.T. come from the same universe. When making the "Star Wars" prequels in the '90s, Spielberg made this belief official. If you look carefully at the pods of the galactic senate in "The Phantom Menace," there is a delegation of creatures from E.T.'s species.
What movie does this sentence describe? A virgin lights a candle and three witches come back to life riding on vacuums.
Magic Candle
Hocus Pocus
"Hocus Pocus" was a 1993 Disney movie that resonated with older Millennials and has become a sort of cult favorite over the years. Bette Midler, who played the eldest sister and lead witch Winifred Sanderson, has said in interviews that of all the movies she's made, this remains her favorite. There are a few clever Bette jokes in the movie. When the sisters take the stage to sing for the parents, she proclaims "Hello Salem, my name is Winifred. What's yours?" This is a play on her famous line: "Hello world, my name is Rose, what's yours?" in "Gypsy. " Another example is when Mary (Kathy Najimi) says "Winifred, thou art divine!" This is, of course, a subtle nod to Bette Midler's long-time nickname, The Divine Miss M.
The Witches of Eastwick
The Craft
What movie does this sentence describe? Linus skips trick-or-treating to wait in a pumpkin patch for the arrival of the title character.
Jack O'Lantern
The Children of The Corn
A Charlie Brown Halloween
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
The 1966 animated special tells the story of Linus and his unwavering faith in The Great Pumpkin, to whom he writes letters and forgoes trick-or-treating to stand vigil at the pumpkin patch. The rest of the Peanuts gang goes trick-or-treating without him, and Charlie Brown's luck continues to be rotten as he is only given rocks. This prompted a wave of sympathy among children across the world, and according to creator Charles Schultz, bags and boxes of candy began to arrive in the mail almost immediately "just for Charlie Brown."

What movie does this sentence describe? A man killed on Devil’s Night comes back to life one year later to avenge his death and that of his fiancee.
Devil's Night
Halloween
Justified
The Crow
The gritty and dark movie, "The Crow," starred Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a man brought back to life by the eponymous bird to avenge his murder and the rape and murder of his fiancee, Shelly Webster. While the movie has a (relatively) happy ending, sadly the cast did not. An accident involving prop guns and blanks led to Lee being shot for real during filming. He was immediately taken to a hospital but later died, despite six hours of surgery to try to save him. Though the death was ruled an accident, the actor who fired the prop gun, Michael Massee, felt so guilty and traumatized that he took a year off from acting and to this day, has never watched the completed film.
What movie does this sentence describe? A razor-fingered guy in a striped sweater kills teenagers in their sleep.
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Despite being titled "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the name of the street is never mentioned in the movie. Wes Craven chose "Elm Street" to honor a street in the town where he attended college. The house in the film is said to be 1428 Elm Street but was filmed at 1428 North Genesee Avenue in Los Angeles. Fans of the movie stole the "1428" numbers from the house and never returned them, something that upset the actual owner of the house.

Sleep Tight
The Nightmare
What movie does this sentence describe? A psycho in a hockey mask kills teens at a defunct summer camp.
Sleepaway Camp
Friday the 13th
When people think of "Friday the 13th," they often think of Jason Voorhies and overlook the fact that the original killer in the franchise was (spoiler alert) Jason's mother, as a very psychotic way of dealing with her son's death. The filmmakers have gone on record, saying they never intended to build a franchise out of the movie, and writer Victor Miller has said that "Jason was only meant as a plot device, and not intended to continue on his mother's grisly work."
Camp Slaughter

What movie does this sentence describe? A loveable and well-meaning bumpkin accidentally unleashes an army of trolls on a small town and joins an army of children to help defeat them.
Trolls
Leprechan
Ernest Scared Stupid
Few characters from the '80s and '90s were as endearing as Earnest Worrell, played by comedian Jim Varney. While the character of Earnest continued to appear in TV specials, this was the last of the eight Earnest movies to be given a theatrical release. This is because the target audience (children) were terrified by the film. They, along with the paying adults, felt the idea of children's souls being trapped in wooden dolls was disturbing, and the death of the trolls was too graphic.
Army of the Damned
What movie does this sentence describe? Two priests try to save a young girl from demonic possession.
The Exorcist
"The Exorcist" is one of the most respected and honored horror movies of all time. In 1973, it was the first horror movie ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award (ultimately losing to "The Godfather"). The only other horror movies nominated for Best Picture are "Jaws" (1975), "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), "The Sixth Sense" (1999), and "Black Swan" (2010). "The Silence of the Lambs" is the only horror movie ever to have won Best Picture.
The Omen
The Prophecy
Child's Play
What movie does this sentence describe? An alcoholic slowly goes crazy in a haunted hotel, endangering his wife, son, and the imaginary friend who lives in his son’s finger.
1408
Vacancy
The Shining
Due to the fact that Danny Lloyd was only 6 years old during filming, Stanley Kubrick went out of his way to protect the child actor's innocence. Kubrick led the boy to believe he was acting in a drama, not a horror movie and extreme measures were taken to make sure the boy was not on set when the scariest scenes were being filmed. Lloyd was only shown a heavily edited version of the film and did not learn the truth of his iconic role until he finally saw the real movie at the age of seventeen, a full eleven years after filming wrapped.

What movie does this sentence describe? The ultimate Mama’s Boy tries to run a motel but inspires a generation of moviegoers to fear showers.
Psycho
"Psycho" has become such an integral part of horror movies and cinematic history in general that it's hard to believe Paramount assumed it would fail and allotted a very small budget to make the film. In order to ease the budget, Hitchcock agreed to forego his standard $250,000 salary, provided he would be given 60 percent of the movie's gross. The movie became an enormous success, banking Hitchcock $15 million. Adjusted for inflation, this amounts to nearly $120 million.

What movie does this sentence describe? A man in a white mask escapes a mental hospital and goes on a killing spree.

Halloween
Michael Myer's emotionless white mask is iconic, but it almost didn't exist. In the documentary, "Halloween' Unmasked 2000" (1999), the crew revealed that the original plan had been to have Michael don a smiling clown mask to reference how he killed Judith while dressed in a clown costume. They decided the mask was "demented and creepy" but just not right. A crew member then found a James T. Kirk "Star Trek" mask for $2 in a costume shop. They painted it white, teased out the hair and painted it brown, and widened the eyes. The lack of emotion in the face was the deciding factor in choosing this mask. William Shatner had no idea his face was the basis for the "Halloween" killer for years until someone asked him about it in an interview. He has since said that he is very honored.
What movie does this sentence describe? A young expectant mother fears that her neighbors want to steal her baby for their satanic cult.
The Omen
The Unborn
Paranormal Activity 2
Rosemary's Baby
The biggest complaint of movies based on books is that they are vastly different from the source material, but that can't really be said for "Rosemary's Baby." This may be the most faithful book-to-movie adaptation of all time, a sentiment expressed often by Ira Levin, the author of the book. Director Roman Polanski tried so hard to be faithful to the novel that he phoned Ira Levin to ask which issue of the New Yorker Guy Woodhouse is reading when he sees a shirt he likes. Levin later admitted he made up that detail and no such issue existed. Also, tannis root does not exist. It was made up by Levin.

What movie does this sentence describe? Five short horror stories are woven together by the presence of a child wearing orange footie pajamas and a burlap sack over his head.
Halloween
Krampus
Trick 'r Treat
"Trick'r'Treat" is an indie film released in 2007 that quickly became a cult classic, winning multiple Fright Meter Awards. The film tells the following stories, most with overlapping characters: The Opening, The Principal, The School Bus Massacre Revisited, and Surprise Party, all of which feature a small child in the aforementioned orange PJs and burlap sack on his head showing up at crucial parts of their stories. The fifth story is called Meet Sam, where the audience learns the truth about Sam, the mysterious child. The sixth section, The Conclusion, shows characters from all five stories interacting and overlapping on a street while children trick-or-treat, unaware of the horrors happening around them.
Donnie Darko
What movie does this sentence describe? A widowed mother and her son live in fear when the monster in a storybook comes to life.
Sinister
The Babadook
"The Babadook" started out as a small, independent film that relied on the kindness of strangers. Of the film's $2.5 million budget, more than $30,000 came from a Kickstarter campaign. Director Jennifer Kent wisely followed Stanley Kubrick's example and went out of her way to protect child actor Noah Wiseman as much as possible from the film's scary plot. She told him an extremely G-rated explanation of the film, his mother was on set at all times, and an adult actor stood on his knees to take Wiseman's place in the scenes where Samuel was abused by his mother. The film has found commercial success and critical acclaim. Perhaps the highest praise came from William Friedkin, who had directed "The Exorcist." "I've never seen a more terrifying film than 'The Babadook,'" Friedkin said. One final bit of trivia: "ba-badook" is Hebrew for "he is coming for sure."
Insidious
A Monster Comes
What movie does this sentence describe? A family of cannibals terrorizes a group of friends with a very noisy weapon.
The Hills Have Eyes
Ravenous
Hannibal Rising
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a cult classic that tells the story of a group of friends who run for their lives after Leatherface tries to kill them with a chainsaw. Despite the title, only one of the movie's five victims is killed by the chainsaw. One is run through with a meat hook, one is run over by a semi-truck, and two are bludgeoned to death. The movie's opening narration was done by actor John Larroquette, who says his payment was a joint of marijuana. In a 2008 interview, he said he had never seen the film.

What movie does this sentence describe? A group of film students gets lost in the woods while trying to find an urban legend.
Urban Legend
The Mothman Prophecies
The Blair Witch Project
"The Blair Witch Project" is credited with starting the "found-footage" genre of film (and also with causing countless cases of motion sickness in moviegoers). The filmmakers strove to achieve realism throughout the film and used a variety of ways to achieve this. The lead actors were all led to believe the Blair Witch was a real urban legend and did not find out until much later that the writer invented the character. There was essentially no script, just an outline on the mythology of the Blair Witch, so all lines are improvised and the majority of reactions are genuine. The teeth and hair found by Heather near the end are actual human teeth and hair; Josh Leonard agreed to cut some of his hair and director Eduardo Sánchez's dentist agreed to supply actual human teeth.
Wrong Turn
What movie does this sentence describe? An audio tape unleashes a horde of demons, which possess and terrorize a group of college students.
The Evil Dead
This low-budget cult classic was directed by Sam Raimi and starred Bruce Campell, who were friends in high school. Despite wanting to film in their home state of Michigan, they filmed "The Evil Dead" in Morristown, Tennessee because Tennessee state officials were the only ones showing enthusiasm and a willingness to help with the project. The cabin itself has since burned down. An urban legend sprung up that lightning struck the house, but Sam Raimi has since revealed that he burned down the condemned and derelict building himself on the last day of filming.
The Ring
When A Stranger Calls
The Prophecy
What movie does this sentence describe? A mysterious organization orchestrates the killing of a group of friends, and a technician finally meets a merman.
The Cabin in the Woods
"The Cabin in the Woods" is a self-aware horror comedy that frames the hunting of five college students being hunted by "zombie backwoods idiots" with the external corporation that manipulates events in order to sate the bloodlust of The Ancient Ones by sacrificing one of each archetype: The Whore (Jules), The Jock (Kurt), The Fool (Marty), The Scholar (Holden), and The Virgin (Dana). Of key importance to the plot is the fact that Marty is a huge stoner. However, actor Fran Kranz had no real experience with stoner culture and had to attend intense training with "expert consultants," such as a two-hour session on how to roll a joint and a similarly long session teaching him how to properly light a bong.

What movie does this sentence describe? Ghostface makes prank calls scary and movie references cool before slicing his victims.
One Missed Call
Scream
Rose McGowan (Tatum) has said that this was her favorite filming experience in her career. In filming her death scene (Tatum tries to escape through a dog flap in an opening garage door, but gets stuck and is almost cut in half when the flap reaches the top of the door), McGowan discovered that she was actually small enough to fit through the flap with ease. She accidentally kept falling through the flap, so the crew eventually came up with the solution of nailing her shirt to the inside of the garage door.

Halloween II
What movie does this sentence describe? Demonologists investigate a haunted house that used to belong to baby-killing witch.
The Omen
The Prophecy
The Conjuring
"The Conjuring" tells the story of the real-life Perron family, who moved into a home that was once occupied by the real-life Bathsheba Sherman, and strange happenings were investigated by the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is true that the house had a long history of its occupants dying over the eight generations that lived there: there were two suicides, a poisoning, a rape/murder, two drownings, and four who froze to death. Records indicate that most deaths were descendants of Bathsheba Sherman's family. The real Bathsheba was accused of killing an infant and engaging in witchcraft, but she was declared not guilty in a court of law and eventually died of natural causes.
The Haunting

Dawn of the Dead
28 Days Later
Night of the Living Dead

What movie does this sentence describe? The Antichrist kills his nanny, causes his adoptive mother to miscarry and eventually gets his father killed in a church.
The Omen
Robert Thorn may not be Gregory Peck's most recognizable role, but it was his most profitable. He took a huge pay cut (earning only $250,000 salary) but was promised 10 percent of the film's gross. This earned him $6 million just off of American box office results. Film producers were hesitant about approaching Peck to star in the project since his son had recently committed suicide. They weren't sure how Peck would feel about a character whose biological son died and who (in the original version of the script) kills his adoptive son. However, Peck was dealing with his feelings of guilt about not being there for his son prior to the suicide and took the role as a way to help work through his emotions.
The Prophecy
Demon Baby
Devil's Due
What movie does this sentence describe? Evil spirits terrorize a family and the youngest daughter communicates via a television set.
The Ring
Poltergeist
"Poltergiest" is a unique horror movie in that it manages to be scary despite having no murders or human fatalities on screen. That's not to say there are no dead people on-screen; there is a scene where skeletons come up out of the swimming pool while Diane tries to find help. JoBeth Williams, who played Diane, was unaware until after the filming of that scene that those were actual skeletons, not props. She was, understandably, less than pleased when she found out.
White Noise
Paranormal Activity
What movie does this sentence describe? The first vampire movie featured a bald pale Count Orlok with sharp nails and pointy ears.
Interview with The Vampire
Nosferatu
"Nosferatu" is credited as the first vampire movie and is viewed as an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. However, no one involved in the film sought or received permission from Stoker's estate to use the character. Stoker's heirs sued the filmmakers and won. The court ordered that every copy of the film be destroyed. Luckily for cinematic history, a few copies survived and "Nosferatu" has become a horror classic.

What movie does this sentence describe? Six women explore Appalachian caves until they are trapped, attacked and eaten by “crawlers”?
The Descent
"The Descent" plays homage to a few other movies throughout its run. The crawlers were designed to resemble Nosferatu. Sarah falls onto a pile of bones, and the audience can see a wolf's skull among the bones. Director Neil Marshall has stated that that wolf skull belonged to one of the werewolves from his previous film, "Dog Soldiers." The climbers meet at the fictional Chattanooga National Park. This is a reference to the Chattanooga River, which led the main characters into trouble in "Deliverance."
The Cave

What Lies Below
What movie does this sentence describe? A WWII widow and her two young photosensitive children experience spooky visions and occurrences that make them think their home is haunted, but all is not as it seems.
The Others
"The Others" tells the story of Grace, a recent WWII widow and her two young photosensitive children who are relatively cut off from the world in their house in the Channel Islands. The movie leads the audience to believe the house is haunted, and it is - by Grace and her children. Grace is revealed to have had a nervous breakdown and smothered her children and shot herself when she realized what she had done. Her children are said to be allergic to sunlight, but at the end of the movie are able to play in the sun (since they're dead and can't be hurt by the sun). This is an actual disease called Xeroderma Pigmentosum. It is so rare that experts estimate only approximately 1,000 people worldwide have the disease.

War of the Dead
What movie does this sentence describe? A video kills viewers seven days after they see it, and a creepy girl crawls out of TV sets.
The Ring

What movie does this sentence describe? A shy high school girl with special powers and a crazy mom finally snaps at prom and kills most of her classmates.
Prom Night
Dance of the Dead
Carrie
"Carrie" was the first film adaptation of a Stephen King novel and firmly established him as a force in the horror genre. However, many of the actors thought they were making a dark comedy or a satire of standard horror films. Nancy Allen (Chris) thought she and John Travolta (Billy) were meant to be comic relief because they "were playing such self-centered, bickering morons." Similarly, Piper Laurie thought her character, Margaret White, was so over the top and fanatical that there was no way it was a serious character in a serious movie. The director, Brian DePalma, had to actually take her aside and explain that Margaret was a genuine character.
Student Bodies
What movie does this sentence describe? A true-crime novelist finds home movies in the attic of his family’s new home, but the movies contain footage of families being murdered and a demon taking a child to consume its soul.
Insidious
Sinister
In "Sinister," Ellison (Ethan Hawke) finds Super8 film of "home movies" whose innocent titles are a nod to the creative murders the film captures (for instance, "Pool Party" shows a family being drowned, "Lawn Work" shows a family being hung from a tree, and so on) and is horrified when he views the contents. Hawke had not seen the footage prior to the scene being shot, so his horrified reactions are genuine.
Scream
The Amityville Horror
What movie does this sentence describe? A British police Sergeant investigates the case of a missing girl and ends up as a sacrifice to the locals' pagan gods.
Gone
Megan is Missing
The Wicker Man
In the original 1973 classic (and not the Nic Cage remake everyone pretends never happened), Sargeant Howie (Edward Woodward) receives an anonymous letter about a missing girl in the Scottish Hebrides. He goes to investigate, but the villagers (who are way more English than they are Scottish) claim the girl never existed. Near the end, Howie finds the girl and rescues her from being offered as a sacrifice to the pagan gods worshipped by the island locals. At the last minute, the girl is revealed to be complicit in the ruse and island leader Lord Summerisle (one of Christopher Lee's creepiest roles of all time) tells Howie that he was the intended sacrifice all along. Lee often remarked that this is his favorite role and appeared in the film for free because he loved it that much.

What movie does this sentence describe? Four high school outcasts form a coven and use witchcraft to get revenge on their bullies, but eventually turn on each other.
The Witches of Eastwick
Suspiria
The Craft
"The Craft" inspired a generation of girls to become at least mildly interested in witchcraft and Wicca. Fairuza Balk (Nancy) is actually a practicing Wiccan in real life and was able to advise filmmakers in order to make the movie as realistic as possible. In helping filmmakers research the LA Wiccan scene, she discovered Panpipes Magickal Marketplace in Hollywood, which she bought after the movie.
Practical Magic
What movie does this sentence describe? Two men are drugged and abducted, and awaken to find themselves in a dirty, run-down bathroom with instructions to kill each other in order to save their families.
Captivity
P2
Hostel
Saw
Filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell wanted to make a movie together after finishing film school, but could only afford one room to shoot in. They challenged themselves to write a movie that could be filmed in one room (a la "Twelve Angry Men"). They have also gone on record, saying they never intended to restart the torture porn genre. This is why the original "Saw" is less gory than the "more explicitly nasty" sequels it spawned.
