As for Frank, the Thunderbird, he is freed in New York to find his way to Arizona. Thunderbirds are mythical birds that create and are summoned by lightning in Native American folklore. Hence this is how Frank is summoned in his first appearance in the movie, and why he flies into the storm cloud during the climax.
