The United States of America is privileged to be home to 58 national parks, dotted all over the beautiful landscape of the 50 states (and even in one case, the adjacent ocean). The national parks were championed by presidents like Teddy Roosevelt, who protected over 100 million acres of forest and created five parks. Later on, Woodrow Wilson signed an act to create the National Park Service and tasked it with protecting the then-35 parks in existence. Since then, the park system has grown and flourished. It protects swamps, glaciers, deserts, forests, mountains and stone formations. It reaches from high elevations to below sea level, from high peaks to deep canyons. The park system is a national treasure, a jewel in America's crown.

Each of the American parks has its own character. The Everglades are dreamy and humid, a languid place to laze on an airboat and let the blades do the work. The Grand Canyon is simply overwhelming, a dominating force of nature that shocks you into silence and awe - but only rarely do people hike deep into it. If you want an achievable challenge with a bizarre landscape, you might go somewhere like Slot Canyon, Arches or Badlands, where quizzical rock formations make you wonder how on earth such things came into existence.
