Sanrio is a Japanese company which has been designing and licensing characters since 1963. To date, they have created over 400 characters, some of which have gone on to become a major part of Japanese popular culture. Apart from creating characters, they also produce movies and they also have a hand in animatronics. The company also owns the rights to the Peanuts characters (Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the gang) in Japan. 

Some of the company's characters are so successful that they have gone beyond the Sanrio brand and into one of their own. Some of them include the apathetic unfertilized egg named Gudetama, the sweet and friendly cat named Hello Kitty and her bunny bestie My Melodie, the adventurous little frog called Keropi and the mischievous penguin named Bad Badtz-Maru.

The popularity of these characters has grown significantly since their inception, each of which rakes in millions of dollars from merchandise sales every year.
